This pen was turned using a fence post from the early 1900's
It is Western Red Cedar

After the first pen I said I would never make a pen from anything but wood. Watching that ugly rectangular piece of wood turn into something fantastic really hooked me. When I sit down at my lathe I never know how that pen will look. I look at the wood, watch the grain, the color, the shape, I stop and feel it. As that piece takes shape I go with the flow. So far my pens have been gifts to folks I know. One pen sits displayed as the person refuses to use it as a pen, she calls it “art”. Art is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form “.

Yes, we all can create art and never think of it as such.

Top pen is Zebra wood, the bottom is Russian Olive. I'm becoming fixed on the Russian Olive wood.
